This policy explains how Magic OT Bug Adventures LLC (“we”, “us”) handles information in The Magic OT Bug iPad app (“the App”) and on this website.
The short version
The Magic OT Bug is made for children, so it is built to collect nothing. We do not collect personal information from children or from anyone else who uses the App. Everything your child does in the App stays on your iPad. There are no ads, no third-party analytics or tracking, no accounts, no chat and no social features, and the App never sends your child’s information to us or to anyone else. You can erase all child data at any time from the Grown-Up Portal. If you are a therapist, the notes and goals you keep about the children you work with stay on your iPad too; we never receive them.
Children’s privacy (COPPA)
The App is directed to children and is designed to comply with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We apply the same protections to every user, whatever their age or location. Because the App does not collect personal information from children, there is no collection for a parent to consent to. If we ever wanted to change that, we would first update this policy and obtain verifiable parental consent where the law requires it.
What we collect
From the App: nothing. The App does not send us, or any third party, names, ages, email addresses, phone numbers, location, photos, contacts, advertising identifiers, device identifiers, usage data or any other information about you or your child.
If you email us: we receive your email address and whatever you write, and we use them only to reply and help you. Please do not include your child’s personal information in an email.
What stays on your iPad
To work, the App stores some information locally on the iPad, in the App’s own private storage. We cannot see it, and the App does not send it anywhere. It includes:
- the name and age you enter for each child (we suggest a first name, nickname or initials);
- progress and levels, and details of how each game was played (such as accuracy, timing and skill scores), used for the child’s progress screens and reports;
- earned stickers, drawings, handwriting samples and other things your child makes in the App;
- word lists a grown-up types for the spelling games;
- your settings, such as sound, Calm Mode and writing-line preferences;
- in the optional Professional tools for therapists: the therapist’s own name, credential and practice name (shown on reports); the goals (including IEP goals), session notes (including SOAP notes), session records and progress measures a therapist enters or the App records during sessions; and reports from another iPad that a grown-up chooses to open in the App;
- a short on-device log of app events used to troubleshoot problems, which never contains a child’s name or anything typed. A grown-up can view it in Grown-Up Portal → Settings → Diagnostics. It is not sent anywhere.
This information is used only to run the App on your iPad: picking the right next level, remembering stickers and creations, and showing grown-ups their child’s progress. It is never used for advertising or profiling.
Device features. If a grown-up chooses to save a child’s creation to Photos, iPadOS asks for permission to add it; the App cannot read your photo library. The Tilt Maze game reads the iPad’s motion sensors while it is being played, to roll the ladybug; those readings are not stored or sent.
Backups. If you back up your iPad with iCloud Backup or to a computer, that backup may include the App’s on-device data. Backups are yours and are handled by Apple or your computer, not by us.
No ads, no tracking, no third-party SDKs
The App contains no advertising, no third-party analytics, no crash-reporting services and no tracking technologies, and we do not track you or your child across other companies’ apps or websites.
Network use
The App has no networking code of its own and works offline. The only connections involved are Apple’s own services:
- Purchases. Apple’s in-app purchase system (StoreKit) communicates with Apple to process purchases, restore them and confirm whether a subscription is active. Apple handles this under Apple’s Privacy Policy; we never receive your payment details or your Apple Account information.
- Links. A few fixed links, such as this privacy policy and the App Store page for leaving a rating, open outside the App in Safari or the App Store, and only after the parental gate.
Information Apple may share with us
As the App’s publisher, we may see standard reports that Apple provides to every developer, such as sales and download totals. If the iPad’s owner has chosen to share analytics with app developers in iPadOS Settings, Apple may also provide us with crash reports. These come from Apple, not from the App, are governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy, and do not identify you or your child to us.
Subscriptions and purchases
Optional subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple through the App Store. We do not collect or store payment information. Purchase and restore buttons sit behind the parental gate.
The parental gate
The Grown-Up Portal, purchases, external links, sharing, settings and the data tools are behind a parental gate (a “type the numbers that are spelled out” check), so a child does not reach them by accident.
Sharing you choose to do
A grown-up can choose to save or share something from the Grown-Up Portal, such as a picture of a child’s creation or, in the Professional tools, a report or data export. This uses the standard iPadOS share sheet, and the file goes only where the grown-up sends it. We do not receive it unless you send it to us yourself.
A report or export can include a child’s name, goals, session notes and progress. Once shared, the file is outside the App and is handled by whoever receives it, so please send it only to people who should have it, using a method suited to private information.
Your choices: delete and export
Because your child’s data lives only on your iPad, you are in control of it:
- Delete all child data: Grown-Up Portal → Settings → Privacy & safety → Delete all child data permanently erases every child profile and everything the App stores about the children: progress and game details, drawings and creations, stickers, word lists, therapist goals, session notes and session records, reports received from another iPad, and report or export files the App created. It cannot be undone. The grown-up’s own account, the therapist’s name, credential and practice name, and general app settings are kept. If you need to keep any records, export them first.
- Delete one child: open that child’s page in Grown-Up Portal → Settings and choose Delete. This erases that child’s profile and everything stored about them, including therapist goals and notes.
- Delete the App: removing the App from the iPad removes its on-device data.
- Export: where the App offers it, a grown-up can create a report or picture on demand and share it wherever they choose.
We hold no copy of your child’s information, so we cannot view, recover or delete it for you, but we are glad to help with any question at info@magicotbugadventures.com.
For therapists, clinics and schools
The Professional tools let an occupational therapist or educator keep goals, session notes and session records about the children they work with. That information may be health information, or part of a student’s education record. All of it stays on the iPad where it is entered. Magic OT Bug Adventures LLC does not receive, store or have any access to it, and the App has no accounts or servers through which it could reach us.
HIPAA. Because we never receive or have access to your clients’ information, using the App does not involve sharing protected health information with us. Whether HIPAA applies to your practice, and how you meet it, depends on your practice: you remain responsible for protecting your clients’ information on your iPad and in anything you export or share.
Schools (FERPA). For school-based staff, notes and goals about students may be education records. They stay on the iPad and are not disclosed to us. Please follow your district’s policies on devices, backups and sharing. We are glad to help with a district’s student-data privacy agreement or questionnaire.
Good practice when you keep client information in the App:
- protect the iPad with a passcode and Face ID or Touch ID, and do not leave it unlocked or share it with people who should not see your notes;
- consider a first name, nickname or initials instead of a child’s full name;
- iCloud Backup and computer backups can include the App’s data, so follow your organization’s rules for backups (an iPad’s iCloud Backup can be switched off for individual apps in iPadOS Settings);
- share reports and exports only through channels your practice or district approves for confidential information;
- when you no longer need a child’s records in the App, export anything your record-keeping rules require you to keep, then delete the child.
Data security
Information the App stores is kept in the App’s private storage on the iPad and protected by the iPad’s own security: its encryption, which is tied to the iPad’s passcode. We recommend always using a passcode. Because nothing is sent to us, we keep no server-side copy of your child’s information that could be breached.
This website
This website sets no cookies, uses no analytics and loads no third-party resources (no outside fonts, scripts or trackers). It is hosted by GitHub Pages. Like any web host, GitHub may process standard server logs, such as visitors’ IP addresses, under the GitHub General Privacy Statement.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version on this page and update the effective date above. If a change is material, we will give notice before it takes effect, by posting a clear notice on this website and, where appropriate, in the App’s update notes. We will not begin collecting personal information from children without first obtaining any parental consent the law requires.
